Teen Mother Charged In Bizarre Drowning Death Of Infant Girl
A teenaged mother has been charged in the bizarre drowning death of her infant daughter.
Savarin DeJesus, 18, was staying at the Fox House, a city-financed home for young mothers in East Harlem over the weekend. Police say that after a night of drinking, DeJesus came back and vomited into a bucket. Her little girl was sleeping next to her.
When the young mother woke up, her 3-month-old, Niah Ford, was found inside the bucket. Police say she accidentally drowned.
Appearing before the judge, DeJesus said, "I loved my baby. I want you to know that."
Neighbors said through a translator she was a good mother.
"She was a girl who, when she went out, she left someone to take care of the baby," said a neighbor. "She loved her baby a lot. She loved her and used to take care of her. I don't know what happened here, but she was so careful that she didn't let people in the deli smoke in front of the baby and I know she loved her very much and adored her. I just don't know what happened."
DeJesus is charged with criminally negligent homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.
Bail has been set at $3,000.
