Sony clarifies some PS3 controller talk

Though there's still so much up in the air about the PS3 still, the controller is really one of the hot button issues.

There was an update today, based on Japanese tech site Broadband Watch.

According to the report, the controller will have to be paired to the console via the USB cable before play. This pairing process will be required each time the console has been shut down and turned back on, or - given the rough translation - possibly every time the controller has lost power.

It's unlikely that putting the console into standby mode will cause a reconnection requirement, if it's console-related. It's also unlikely that many of those lucky (?) enough to get a launch PS3 are going to want to leave it on, even powered-down, 24/7.

Those wondering about battery life will be happy to note the controller is expected to get about 30 hours of playtime out of one 2.5 hour charge. As the battery isn't replaceable, when it's no longer recharging the controller needs to be replaced or sent for repairs.

Does either option seem especially appealing?

Oh well, it's not like we can't trust Sony's batteries. DOH!

[Edit - since posting this, impress has corrected the original article. It seems that pairing isn't required, that was a "feature" of the early revisions of the console. It may still be required for the initial connection, for Bluetooth's authentication process, but that would likely be it. The controllers? Those are still disposable.]

that sucks. I really hope people dont have to send them in but it wont shock me. sony, you suck.

That is really utterly shit. What the heck are Sony thinking?
Someone needs to snap two bricks on their balls to shock them into sensibility.

Anonymous said...

It's the same thing as an iPod.

Anonymous said...

I'm always impressed with how stupid people can be on the internet. Both of these points are completely trivial. ALL bluetooth devices require an initial pairing to interoperate. You will probably not have to do this more than once. Also, on the battery point, it's rechargeable. Do you whine about your cell phone or iPod, because it has an internal rechargeable battery? The technology is so refined at this point that these devices last for years and continue to work just fine. I usually laugh at all the anti-console propaganda, but this level of ignorance is unprecedented.

Duo said...

Brilliant! make a product that continuatally needs service...move over microsoft, sony knows how to play the game too!

Becky said...

To Anon,

I can replace the battery in my mobile phone no problem. I cannot replace the battery in the PS3 controller?
That is a very bad design.

Anonymous said...

Are you all idiots? Every rechargable battery has a limited life, and this will be no different for the PS3 controller. As the other anonymous said, the iPod also has a non-replaceable battery. Go cry about that.

Tamati said...

People already do, The Problems with the iPod's internal batterys are well documented, just because the ps3 controller shares the same problem dosent change the fact its a stupid design.

Anonymous said...

So you are happy to buy a new controller when the battery fails? Don't forget Sony's excellent recent record of battery manufacture.

Linh said...

plenty of people have cried about the ipod battery issue. it'd lose it's very sleek appeal though with a battery cover line.

it does well enough on it's own, I don't see the ps3 being a problem unless controllers start catching fire in your hands... that... would be bad

Anonymous said...

Is it really so hard to wait till it's out? I swear every other Digg gaming page has something against the PS3.

Once the average gamer has it in his or her hands we can really see what it's like and whats so bad or good about it...

Anonymous said...

Its not hard, if you cant replace the battery yourself your a nub.

Anonymous said...

It is easier to replace than an iPod.

Anonymous said...

Wow, non replacable battery, combined with a broken cache effectivly making the entire system 25% slower than it could ever possibly be.

What sort of retard would ever pay 600$ for such a pile of shit?

Anonymous said...

So an iPod takes about 2-3 years for the battery to die when the battery life for one charge is maybe 8 hours. I don't remember how long mine lasts, I don't even think that long. So you have a battery that lasts 3 times as long on one charge, one controller should last for AT LEAST 3 years. After three years most of my controllers have taken enough of a beating that I'd be willing to replace them anyway. I plan on buying a PS3 eventually, but please cry some more about it.

Anonymous said...

The only reason to design something with a built in rechargable batterly like this is to sucker you into buying an entirely new item when the battery stops recharging properly. Anyone with a competent design allows you to replace your battery if it fails. See any cell phone for an example.

Chris said...

I'm always impressed with the ignorance of posters such as Anonymous on the internet myself...I don't know about more recent models, but last I checked the battery in a cell phone is both removable and replacable, if and when it refuses to recharge properly any more, or becomes damaged or unusable in some other way. iPod..I don't have one to check, but doesn't that vary from model to model? I remember the major flak Apple caught not too long ago on just this subject-- particularly due to the outrageous costs they were charging for battery replacement--as well as the various web sites with instructions on how to replace the battery yourself.

Hmmm. I suppose this further stupidity on Sony's part *could* be reduced by them stating that they have some sort of lifetime warrantee program for battery replacement, and reasonable rates for same. On the other hand...just how hard is it to put in a user-accessible battery compartment containing, at worst, some sort of proprietary battery pack?

Anonymous said...

hahahahaha

Coleman said...

The point is you have to send the controller in to sony and get the thing replaced. Plus we all know about sony's recent history of batteries I hope it doesn't catch fire in your hand.

Anonymous said...

I changed the battery in my ipod mini, its really not that hard. Im sure that there will be plenty of places on the internet where you can buy really cheap batteries for the controller, just like for the iPod. Just unsrew it, and put the new battery in. Nothing to get all worried about here.

Anonymous said...

Either learn Japanese or quit commenting on things you don't know for certain.
Last sentence in the paragraph that talks about controller says that once battery is completely dead you can either buy a new controller or have that battery replaced.

Mario said...

I do believe the article in question stated that the controller would need to be paired upon every loss of power (WITH the usb cable)... This isn't like pairing my cell phone to my laptop. That is wireless, takes 10 seconds, and I am back up working. The controller requires you to unwind the USB cable, plug it in, turn it on, pair the thing up, disconnect the cable, and go back to playing your game... Doesn't this theoretically defeat the purpose of having a wireless controller?

Seconds, the battery life. Personally, most people will likely use the controller significantly more than they would an ipod... Again, the ipod was $250+, where as the controller was 35 or 40 dollars.. I'd willingly replace the ipod battery if it went south before I would replace the battery in the controller (which likely will cost as much to replace the battery as it would to replace the controller)...

Likely a way for Sony to make more money off of the public... And more likely to coop some of the cost of all the faulty battery recalls that have been going around...

No thanks on the PS3... I'd rather play Halo 3 anyway.

Anonymous said...

bigboy, thank you for setting me straight, I now realize how wrong I was to like something you didn't.
Rest assured tomorrow I'm going to BestBuy near me, buying an XBox 360 and beginning to worship it just like you.

Anonymous said...

Can you imagine what would happen to Sony if they had problems with the batteries in the PS3 controllers and needed them to be recalled!!

Anonymous said...

And you will only need to reset the connection with the controller if you unplug the console. If you leave it in standby, like your other electronics, you'll be fine.

And i do know everything so i won't "quite" talking about it.

What!?! You are being tongue in cheek aren't you?

A you don't need to plug an ipod in everytime u lose your battery to resync it. All songs and setting are still there. Hell you dont even need to fire up itunes to charge it.

B. Sony batteries have always been dud. That's why when you buy a Sony Video Camcorder, you change the battery to a third party one right away. The things are leathal!

greatone1987 said...

and to add to that, you shouldnt need to change an ipod battery ever! if you do, it's a waste of money. The best way to get full charge if it's dying quick is to stick the back on the radiator. The heat causes the working to go crazy and there you go... full charge! (WARNING! ONLY TRY THIS IF IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY! SOMETIMES IT CAN MESS THE ACTUAL IPOD UP AS WELL!)

Mark said...

Wow, that totally sucks! :(

Chris said...

So let me get this straight. You are upset that you cannot replace the battery in the PS3 controller. Correct?

Let's say the controller costs about $40 once prices have settled.

If you think a replacement battery (if it was made available) would cost less then $30 you are seriously mistaken.

So therefore your options are:

a) replace a 2-3 year old broken down controller when the battery dies for $40.

or

b) replace the battery for $30, and 6 months later replacing the whole controllers when it dies for $40.

Gee...Sony is insane for not making the battery user replaceable.

Anonymous said...

Really? Why would it be more than the Xbox 360 battery, much less $20 more?

Jacque said...

“The High Def Gaming Era doesn’t start until Sony says so”

I can't wait for my PS3, with my wireless rumble free cheap plastic controllers that I need to plug in everytime I power on. Oh and don't forget my Blu Ray Games that cost more than any other format for the Same Graphics. I can't wait for the launch games (even though they been out a year already and LOOK the same if not better on the 360).

Sony must have a Huge Room where a bunch of Geniuses sit around all day discussing this amazing console. The ideas that are brought to the table on a daily basis are just mind boggling to me. I could never have thought of all these wonderful things that the PS3 will bring to my life and at such a competitive price.

Whatever!!!!!!!

VIVA le 360

Anonymous said...

Given the price, I doubt anyone who can actually afford a PS3 is going to be worried about forking out £50 for a new controller after 3 years. By the time the batteries run out, you'll be able to get 3rd party versions
wholesale
in all likelyhood anyway at much lower prices anyway.

Okay, so the PS3 has non-replaceable controller batteries that last 24 hours to a charge.

The XBox360 has replaceable controller batteries that last 25 hours at $12 each, or you can get your own rechargable AA's.

And the Wii uses AA batteries, Rechargable or Standard with 30-60 hours of use.

Based solely on the controller's battery life (which is not the best judgement of which console to buy), I would say Sony put themselves at the bottom of the pile... I know too many people who won't put their controller on the charger when they're done, and being able to swap out for a spare battery is a must for them.

Anonymous said...

IF my PS3 controller lasts as long as it will take for the battery to die I would be surprised. I dont mind replacing my controllers, theyre going to wear out anyway if I dont break them faster by getting pissed at my games. Of course, heaven forbid you dont go out and buy a less expensive, off-brand wireless controller that will probably HAVE replaceable batteries AND better quality. You're going to need more than one controller anyway.

As for the 360 fanatics looking for every reason to make some comment to flame every other system: Do you remember when it came out? The power supply overheated. The hard drives were crap, and the 360 uses software emulation for its backwards compatability (with which you cant even play all the games with), AND which makes the poorly emulated games LAG. If Halo had come out for the Playstation instead, you probably wouldnt own an XBOX either.

Fact is, every console has its issues. The more complex the systems are, the more room there is for error. People are still going to buy them. If their controller bombs because of the design, chances are they will come out with a new model, like Microsoft did with those gigantic controllers. I wouldnt sweat it too much.

Anonymous said...

the Wii and 360 are the man-whores of this world. providing value for money.

Sony is just being a Pimp, and slapping the shit out of sony users and fans for money...lol....

Anonymous said...

ha ha, that's funny!!!

Anonymous said...

Ps3 = over-priced, poorly thought out, difficult to code for, and gameplay/graphics comparable to an xbox 360. No thanks Sony!

Anonymous said...

At least you wont need to pry the controller open to change the battery like you do on a ipod, just wait till your hands start feeling like they are burning, turn the controller over, let the battery fire burn a hole under the controller, replace the battery and presto, back to gaming.

Anonymous said...

Sony's dumb, whoever who thought of this lame strategy needs a spank in the butt for not treating their loyal consumers properly.

I really think they should make everything interdependent and irreplaceable so when the controller's batteries die, people must replace the whole system rather than just the controller.

I'm a genius. :)

Anonymous said...

Talk about a non-issue.

Microsoft *still* cant resolve their hardware issues a year after launch and people are going to cry about having to return swap a damn controller in three years?

I'd stick hot needles in my eyes before I'd give Microsoft my money so they can give it George Bush and his cronies.

And for what? A POS console that's lucky to last until it's 90 day warranty is up? So I can upscale 600p games like pgr3 to 720p then upscale them again to 1080i?

Wow...All you have to do is plug in the controller into the USB port when the system is off, and it gets charged. How inconvenient. I bet the same people bitching and moaning are the same ones that will spend 10 minutes looking for the remote for their TV instead of getting up and changing the channel by hand.

BTW, the PS3 has a very smooth platform, and if you have not played both the PS3 and 360 then you need to quit running your suck.

Anonymous said...

That is not a good thing but it will still be better than the crap Wii

evem though other game companies or sony them self will eventually make one with a replacable battery if people start to complain or they just "might" decide to replace the controller so it has replacable rechargable batteries. But im not sure. Can you still play with the controller if the USB is hooked up . Please respond

Rod Oracheski said...

Yes, if the battery is dead you should still be able to plug in the controller via USB cord to use it.

Do the math...plain and simple. The cost of non rechargable conventional batteries over the corse of three years vs. the 50 premium sony is charging for replacement controllers, (now that is with prices eventually dropping...prob 35 to 40 bucks)not to mention third party hardware. No Brainer. What would a three year replacement battey cost for a sony controller? the same as a whole new controller! Sony doesn't care about the crappy plastic incasing the battery. It will cost them more to open the thing up and replace the battery then it would be to manufactur a whole new unit!

uhh, guys, i never looked to see if there was a date on this forum... but sony is replacing the batteries for free now anyway.. pluss.. id rather buy a new controller anyway,i mean after a couple years it wont really matter,, like.. some dud there mentioned the ipod, sure there great mp3s,, but my all my friends iopd batteries are shit, like 5 hour charge times and hey only work for like 2 hours, apple charges 50 dollers just to replace the battery, id replace my own batteries anyway, or eve jsut take the old batteies conncters and hook it up to some kind of external thingman, customization to the max(h) woo!

I think everyone should calm down, Sony has said that their lithium batteries shouldn't wear out after a few years, but also promise to replace them for you if they do.

I don't know about you, but I'm happy with that.

Anonymous said...

Umm... the charge has always lasted for like several days of playing on my PS3, and it's certainly better then the old wireless controllers with the double A batteries that needed to be replaced or whatever like every couple of days... very expensive after a while.
And FYI all you need to do after you re-plug in, power on, or whatever you PS3 is push the PS button in the middle of the controller and you're good to go... takes like 1, 2 seconds tops... not a big deal...

Anonymous said...

Why are you complaing my ipod has lasted over two years and I haven't had to replace the battery. And also my xbox 360 broke after two WEEKS of plaing it and it costs one hundred dollars to get the warranty and when the three sixty breaks the warrenty expires. And so I would rather replace a ps3 controller every year for 60 dollars than a sending in a whole console for one hundred dollars to get it fixed.

Anonymous said...

you all are stupid for posting that "people will have to buy a new controller when the battery ends it's capability of being re-charged" (those who did not say this are excluded). The instructions on how to replace the battery are in the manual . I know, you probly do not read much and find the ps3's manual too hard to sound out all the things called words in it. Bash ps3 all you want. sure, it has things to gripe about but if you really want to waste your time doing that JUST DO NOT BUY ONE!!! ie: shut the fk up! if you have not noticed, you are still a virgin with a game system. when that changes I will be back to tell you what all is wrong with your girlfriend and why you should not be paying for her...

Replacing the odd controller here and there for dead batteries is no big deal.
