National Bankruptcy Day [Jan. 9th, 2009|02:09 am]

Is Feb. 10 financial doomsday for thousands?

New law could force companies into ruin

By Chelsea Schilling

A new government regulation scheduled to take effect next month has thousands of retailers, thrift stores and small businesses worried they will be forced to permanently close their doors – and destroy their merchandise.

The law is expected to have such a devastating impact that Feb. 10 is now unofficially known as "National Bankruptcy Day."

Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, or HR 4040, a retroactive rule mandating that all items sold for use by children under 12 must be tested by an independent party for lead and phthalates, which are chemicals used to make plastics more pliable.

All untested items, regardless of lead content, are to be declared "banned hazardous products.'' The CPSC has already determined the law applies to every children's item on shelves, not just to items made beginning Feb. 10.

The regulations could force thousands of businesses – especially smaller ones that cannot afford the cost of lead testing – to throw away truckloads of children's clothing, books, toys, furniture and other children's items and even force them to close their doors.

Too long for here. See full article at:

Tax-Exempt Tyranny

By Dick Morris and Eileen McGannIt now looks like half of President-elect Barack Obama's stimulus package will take the form of "tax cuts" for 95 percent of all Americans. Yet this wouldn't so much boost the economy as trigger a massive, unhealthy shift in American politics.

Under Obama's plan, the majority of American voters would pay no federal income taxes, but would get money from the government instead. That is, these "refundable tax credits" are basically welfare checks - and Obama's plan would leave the most of us collecting, not paying.

A $200 billion giveaway won't do much to get a $14 trillion economy rolling again. But the plan would leave any future taxpayer revolt no hope of majority support.

Today, the bottom 50 percent of U.S. taxpayers pays a total of $30.6 billion in federal income taxes on a combined income of about $1 trillion. So, about 3 percent of all federal income-tax payments come from the poorest half of the country. (The top 1 percent pays 40 percent; the top 25 percent pay 85 percent of the federal income tax.)

Obama's plan - he'd give all couples a $1,000 refundable tax credit and all single people $500 - would funnel more than $50 billion to the lowest half of the country, thereby completely wiping out their total federal tax liability. In most cases, it would trigger a "refund" welfare check.

In one stroke, this would transform the majority of voters from taxpayers into tax eaters - and leave an increasingly small minority to pay the bill. Whether or not this is good economics, it is very dangerous politics.

Essentially, it would put those who actually pay the taxes that fund our government into much the same situation as landlords in New York City - hopelessly outvoted by their tenants, who use their political clout to limit rents and landlords' profits.

Since Ronald Reagan, the anti-tax movement has been based on a blue-collar revolt against high taxes; it would lose that constituency under the Obama plan. Taxpayers would be politically helpless and the tax-eating majority would have free reign to impose any levies it wished.

Almost all of the 68 million tax filers in the country's bottom economic half would get a check from Washington at tax time. Some would be among the 22 million who get money from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Others would get a $500 check through the (Bush-passed) Child Tax Credit - and all would get funds through the new Obama tax credit.

Welfare would no longer be only for the poor - the majority of the voters would depend on government handouts. This very system is what makes European social democracies so resistant to change.

In 1980, the bottom 50 percent of the nation paid 7 percent of the national tax bill, after refunds and credits. It now pays 3 percent; under Obama's plan, it would pay less than nothing (that is, it would net a profit from the IRS). In 1980, the top 1 percent paid 19 percent of the income-tax burden; now it's 40 percent. Taxes have become the province only of the rich.

Of course, the shift in tax burden also mirrors the incredible increase in incomes of the wealthy in the last 30 years - the top 1 percent earned only 8 percent of the total national income in 1980; now it earns 22 percent. And the poorest half has seen its share of national income fall from 17 percent in 1980 to only 12.5 percent today.

So, it is both fair and sensible to give the poor a tax break and to draw the bulk of federal revenues from the rich. But to exempt the bottom half - a majority of the voters - from paying any taxes and to award them refund checks instead would dangerously alter the fundamental balance of national politics. For the economically well off, it could effectively become taxation without representation - which, as the founders of our nation warned, leads to tyranny.

Pelosi's Power Grab: Her Plan to Shackle the GOP

By: Jim Meyers

Republican Rep. Roy Blunt tells Newsmax that rule changes pushed through the House on Tuesday by the Democratic majority leave “the deck stacked to shove a Speaker Pelosi agenda through the House.”

The former Minority Whip from Missouri also declared that the changes are an “absolute contradiction to everything Barack Obama said” about nonpartisan politics during the campaign.

Constitution To Be Put Up For Grabs? [Jan. 7th, 2009|01:28 am]

[mood | worried]

Once it opens there are no limits.

Another Constitutional Convention?

Is it time for a new Constitutional Convention?

A recent proposal for a new federal Constitutional Convention in Ohio failed, but another is now being considered in Virginia. While some people, rightfully concerned with the multi-billion dollar "bailout" of private companies and huge financial institutions by the U.S. Congress want to amend the United States Constitution to require a balanced budget, others, with entirely different motives, would like nothing more than to rewrite that document altogether.

I, too, share concern for the late action of Congress to give away taxpayer money to privately owned businesses, because such measures are without any justification under the Constitution already. And the prospect of powerful special-interest groups having anything to do with writing a new constitution should frighten anyone who loves the liberty we have enjoyed for over 220 years under our present form of government.

Anti-American, Anti-Semitic Protests in San Francisco [Jan. 7th, 2009|01:16 am]

From:
Move America Forward
http://www.moveamericaforward.org/index.php/DailyFile/

Once again, ignoring the Arab world’s constant calling of “death to Israel”, constant rocket attacks at civilian targets, and devastating bus bombings, far left protesters here in America were quick to rally and express “solidarity”.

Video provided by Leigh Wolf of San Francisco College Repupblicans

Why these these free love and cannabis smoking throwbacks want to express solidarity with people and organizations like Hamas and Al Qaeda—who would have them slain for not converting to Islam—is beyond my comprehension.

The only explanation is that Hamas, Al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, et. all, are the enemies of America (and Israel) so for the far left, who see their own home country as the enemy, these terrorist organizations are natural bedfellows.

If any leftists ever read the MAF Blog (for their daily 5 minutes of hate perhaps) let me just show you the kind of people you are expressing “solidarity” with.

Here’s a nice video of Hamas “resistance fighters” using CHILDREN as human shields. You can actually see the guy (holding an assault rifle) run over to a group of kids who are huddling together for cover, grab one up and drag him across the street in front of his body. There is NO WAY this could be misconstrued as “oh maybe he is carrying the kids to safety” no...its clear from the video (he runs the child over to a crowd of other men with rifles) that the child is taken from a position of relative safety and used as a shield for battle.

Despicable. just watch...if you can stomach it…

Hello [Jan. 4th, 2009|12:48 am]

kris_schnee
Hello. I'm new to this group, and looking forward to what you have to say. I'm Kris, a story writer with some college newspaper experience. Currently I'm marketing my first novel: a story about freedom, featuring ocean colonization and robotics. I'm also setting up Freedom Frontier, which I hope will be a public forum for politics.

From studying American history and graduating from law school (not a profession I want to return to), I've reached the opinion that much of what the US federal government does today is illegal. This is a problem, and it's compounded by our people's tolerance of, and demand for, unconstitutional programs. We need to do something, and unfortunately the "small government" party has completely lost its credibility. We're also at the point where we might soon see laws we can't safely obey, such as a health care mandate or forced national service. So, I'm keeping an eye on the political situation and trying to contribute to finding solutions to it.

Santa - Liberal or Conservative? [Dec. 24th, 2008|09:07 pm]

Is Santa liberal or conservative?

By Reb Bradley

It's that time of year when many are thinking about that jolly old guy in the red suit, famous for delivering gifts to children all over the world. He is a hero to many, but have you ever stopped to ask yourself – is Santa liberal or conservative?

Based on what we know of him revealed in song and tradition, I think it is safe to say that Santa is clearly conservative.

I know, I know – some of you conservatives may already have Santa pegged as a liberal – the only liberal, in fact, that some of you welcome into your home.

But hear me out. What do we really know of him?

Santa "knows when you are sleeping and knows when you're awake." Yes, sounds a little like liberal "Big Brother," but what is he actually doing? Like any constructive authority, Santa is evaluating our performance – to determine if we should receive compensation. He is making a list and checking it twice, assessing if we have been naughty or nice – if nice, we will be rewarded with a present – if naughty, we get nothin'.

Mitt Romney's Proposed Stimulus Package [Dec. 21st, 2008|01:14 pm]

wolvenone
You can read Mitt Romney's proposal for a Republican Economic Stimulus Plan on NRO.

Of course the former Governor and Presidential Nominee doesn't actually have any say in the stimulus that'll ultimately be passed next year. However looking it over I find myself agreeing with most if not all of his thoughts on the matter. Its a real shame but Romney really is the guy we should've set to run against Obama, he would've been so much better equipped to handle the current economic crisis than either McCain or the President Elect. It's a shame there were so many people who didn't vote for him simply because of his Religious affiliation.

War On Christmas Gets Funny [Dec. 14th, 2008|02:54 am]

Every year the people who hate religion get more petty and pick on ever tinier nits.

This year's prime victim? Rudolph!

But there are laughs to be had about some of it.

Most of us are probably aware of the display in the Washington State House where "atheists"* got a sign placed next to a manger scene condemning religion.

Well, that led to protests but, funnier, to requests to set up displays for "Santa Will Take You To Hell" and a "Festivus Pole", among others. That led to the people in charge crying "ENOUGH!"

Prediction: No more holiday displays next year. Thanks a lot, haters.

* Atheists are people without a religious belief but these people are more properly called antitheists - people out to destroy religion. Real atheists should be offended that the term has been abused this way. (Unless they secretly agree but just don't have the nerve to say so.)

http://nicedeb.wordpress.com/2008/12/09/video-rev-wright-on-the-dec-7th-bombing-of-hiroshima/

"Reverend" Jeremiah Wright made this segment a part of his last sermon...

"Today is December 7th... The day that this government killed over 80,000 Japanese civilians in Hiroshima in 1941... two days before killing an additional 64,000 Japanese civilians at Nagasaki by dropping nuclear bombs on innocent people."

Let's see... Obviously, he's never read a history book... December 7th, 1941, as we all know, was when the Japanese bombed us in Pearl Harbor. Hiroshima was bombed on August 6th, 1945, and according to reports: "During World War II, the Second Army and Chugoku Regional Army were headquartered in Hiroshima, and the Army Marine Headquarters was located at Ujina port. The city also had large depots of military supplies, and was a key center for shipping."

August 15th Japan had surrendered.

'Nanny' star Fran Drescher seeks Senate seat

The Associated Press

ALBANY, N.Y. - It's no laaaaugh, reaaaaaly!

Comedic actress Fran Drescher wants to go from playing nasally New Yawkers in films like "Saturday Night Fever" and sitcoms like "The Nanny" to representing New York in the U.S. Senate.

Publicist Jordan Brown delivered the straight line that Drescher is really, really serious about the seat held by Secretary of State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton. Brown cited Drescher's experience as an actress, advocate for women's health and public diplomacy envoy for the U.S. State Department.

The 51-year-old "This is Spinal Tap" actress joins a field headed by Caroline Kennedy and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. New York Gov. David Paterson will make the choice if Clinton is confirmed secretary of state in the Obama administration.

The Questionable Associations of Obama [Dec. 11th, 2008|12:17 pm]

freakylynx
I should note that I disagree with some of the summaries of the association between the mentioned person and Obama. I really doubt they're as succinct as mentioned in some cases or as distant as others are mentioned, the investigation on the connection with Obama and these folks is spotty at best (thanks again Media - Great Job!). In the case of Blagojevich, others have disputed the claim from Obama that there were no talks between him and the President-Elect.

Questionable associations of Obama
By The Associated Press – 1 day ago

In his life and career in Illinois, President-elect Barack Obama has crossed paths with some notable figures who have drawn scorn and scrutiny. Among them:

___

GOV. ROD BLAGOJEVICH: Obama has maintained a cordial but distant relationship with Blagojevich during the governor's tenure.

He has complimented Blagojevich for running "a sound administration" with "the right priorities." He supported his fellow Democrat for re-election in 2006, even though the governor backed someone else over Obama in the U.S. Senate Democratic primary.

Obama's circle of major Illinois political allies and supporters is largely separate from Blagojevich's, with two major exceptions. Both Obama and Blagojevich got extensive money and support from Chicago businessman Antoin "Tony" Rezko. At least one top aide to Obama, Michael Strautmanis, previously worked for Blagojevich.

But Blagojevich's disdain for Obama was clear in court documents released Tuesday after the Illinois governor was arrested. Blagojevich, accused by federal prosecutors of conspiring to sell or trade for personal benefits the Senate seat left vacant by Obama, was overheard complaining at one point that Obama's people are "not going to give me anything except appreciation." He added: "(Expletive) them."

Obama said Tuesday, "I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so I was not aware of what was happening."
