The province's Liberal MPs hope they can parlay their larger presence into increased influence in bringing Newfoundland and Labrador issues to the forefront.

"There's a certain advantage to that, and we've already played an important and decisive card, letting people know within our own caucus that we now represent 10 per cent of the national Liberal caucus," Humber-St. Barbe-Baie Verte MP Gerry Byrne said.  (more)  View comments17  8:42 AM

Hebron moving ahead View comments3
It's full steam ahead for the Hebron project. That was the message from ExxonMobil's Jim Flood, who was in St. John's Wednesday outlining the company's plans to pump first oil from the province's fourth oilfield by the end of 2017.

To meet that deadline, the Hebron partners aim to submit a development application - which kickstarts a regulatory review of the offshore project - by December 2009.  (more)  8:42 AM

Throne speech mum on poverty Post a comment
Poverty didn't rate a single mention in the Harper government's throne speech - even as more Canadians feel the local aftershocks of global economic upheaval.

"Essentially, the government is ignoring this issue completely," says Kelly Law, associate director of the National Anti-Poverty Organization in Ottawa.  (more)  8:42 AM

A swift kick View comments13
It's the side of politics that doesn't garner much public attention - the bully-boy side that says even if your opponent is unconscious on the pavement, make sure you stand over them and keeping kicking.

It is, in all likelihood, the dirty pool that keeps governments in power once their lustre starts to fade.

But any way you slice it, it's abusive.

As a government, you can announce that you're opening the House of Assembly and deliberately keep information about what's going to be considered in the session away from opposition politicians. It means your political agenda has a much better chance of hurrying past an unprepared opposition, but it doesn't mean better laws or more carefully thought-out, crafted and examined legislation.  (more)  8:42 AM

To be or not to be Hamlet Post a comment
What do Hamlet, the ghost of John Barrymore and a discontented television actor have in common?

They happen to be the subjects of the latest play directed and produced by Krista Hann of Patchwork Productions.

"I Hate Hamlet," Paul Rudnick's 1991 comedy, centres around the character of Andrew Rally (played by Philip Goodridge), an actor who has earned fame and fortune from his starring role in the hit TV series "LA Medical." His good luck seems to multiply when he is given the chance to play Hamlet in the prestigious "Shakespeare in Central Park" festival.

While life may seem perfect for Rally, there are a few bumps along the road. His series has just been cancelled, his rich and beautiful girlfriend, Deirdre McDavey (played by Zoe Balsom), clutches her chastity like an expensive designer handbag, and he has no desire to play Hamlet.  (more)  8:42 AM
