Digg stands to face legal fees, at least in the short term (until a judge orders them to be paid back) one way, and no legal fees the other. What's so wrong with them not wanting to take the bullet for the 10 diggers out there who are likely to actually use the key themselves rather than using other's software?... Their cooperation obviously isn't essential in spreading information, so this way they stay out of legal trouble, and the community still gets the information.

For those who say it is about Digg trying to be legal, to them I ask what about the Microsoft Vista crack that was posted on Digg? Or the tons of other cracks?
      Digg has now lost many of the members respect over a small set of digits, and while they hope it will just fade away, we need to make sure it does not.

These numbers are entirely free use and are not intellectual property. These articles dont tell you how to use them illegally. These articles don't recommend that you use them illegally. None of this is illegal and how they could be used is totally up to the user. Digg just sees that the numbers have the possibility of being used illegally. So could guns, but you don't see articles about them being censored. Digg does need to learn a thing or two about free speech.

When it is posted in context to the HD DVD key, it becomes a problem. Unfortunately, with the amount of people posting it, there is going to be a lot of collateral damage because the digg team is not large enough to read every single post to determine the context. However, I'm guessing Kevin Rose is pretty disgusted at the large portion of the community that seems to have blow this out of proportion. It's a minor issue... The magic numbers are all over the place, even without the spam in unrelated articles.

      There's also the condoning of policy. Outside of a few oddballs, most content creators would really rather not have their stuff pirated, and that's why we have copyright laws. Sure, the RIAA and MPAA have been asshats about trying to proterct things and assuming that the consumers are thieves, but that's no reason to give them an excuse to lobby for for more restrictive laws by pirating material just to "stick it to the man."

      If you can't accept the policy, do without. That's the best way to show them.

Apparently they are a key ingredient in pissing of the MPAA. Uses other than that are complicated and require an in-depth understanding of AACS, and they may or may not be illegal where you live.

No one cares that "The AACS LA has no legal leg to stand on", only that they sure as hell would try to sue. No business/website/individual wants legal attention regardless of the eventual outcome because it costs money anyway. Either way, Digg would probably lose due to a screwed up court system.

    You can't stop the will of the people, and if digg is truly a "democratic" site, then expect to see stories like this for the next few weeks.

But only in so much as he believes in freedom and democracy, both of which are always trumped by capital in this nation. When it comes to legitimate companies the MPAA as with most copyright holders issue a cease and desist order proir to actually filing suit, so removing such a post out of hand is a very crappy thing to do. I think digg takes more heat in this regard because they have been and have encouraged the apperance of being a democratically driven system and so the hopes of those who wish to see such a system succeed are dashed against the rocks when digg does not conform to that standard. It's much like Google opening shop in China, and Apple putting off the release of it's core product because "Analysts" think it's a good idea.
