Was It Worth It, Digg?
fieryprophet.com — In light of all the disappearing stories and members, Digg.com had better answer whether their loss of respect in the community that upholds it was worth bending over for a rights-destroying organization.

http://hddvd.ytmnd.com/ - barrymantilope, on 10/12/2007, -33/+10Rumor is Digg and Microsoft are in the middle of negotiating a billion dollar sale and are feeling the pressure to keep certain content off the front page.
Think about it... A billion dollars is a billion dollars.
Can't blame a man for gettin his nut. - HunterTV, on 10/12/2007, -24/+12Ah piss off and grow a pair. *cry* my post was deleted *cry*
- CraigCarlyle, on 10/12/2007, -33/+26If anyone should be ashamed it's the users spamming articles and comments. Digg followed the law, it's the users who were spamming garbage and making a huge deal out of such a minor thing.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -32/+136Can someone please explain 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 ???

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2338184677 - Join the movement. - Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -60/+70Seriously, I don't think anyone in their right mind should "lose respect" from digg. Digg stands to face legal fees, at least in the short term (until a judge orders them to be paid back) one way, and no legal fees the other. What's so wrong with them not wanting to take the bullet for the 10 diggers out there who are likely to actually use the key themselves rather than using other's software?... Their cooperation obviously isn't essential in spreading information, so this way they stay out of legal trouble, and the community still gets the information.
- Ransomowris, on 10/12/2007, -24/+116Has anyone actually sent digg a DMCA takedown notice? Have they been sued? Have they even been CONTACTED?!
Does Digg not realize that they're a multimillion dollar company, that could actually defend itself in a court of law? Does Digg not realize it would have the backing of over 1 million users? Does Digg not realize these goons have no case, since all the content is user-submitted? Are the submitters not the ones really responsible?
Ask yourselves these questions, digg. Until you've actually given us a solid reason for removing these stories, you've lost our trust. - Wilson736, on 10/12/2007, -47/+11I think I speak for everyone when I say:

Seriously, what the ***** is the big deal? It's a god damned number that can be found on 9/10 websites on the internet. You fking geeks need to pull that rod out of your ass and realize that there are battles to fight, and others to avoid. Now go back to digging down people posting truthful but negative information on OS X, Ubuntu, Marijuana and Atheism. - tvblogcan, on 10/12/2007, -32/+22Well many of you know what happened on Digg, Keven Rose and the rest of the staff behind Digg said a big ***** you to freedom of speech and choose money over the users. Now I can bet you as of right now Kevin knows this will just slowly pass by without really needing to address it, after-all a few moaning members is nothing and soon people will forget. But does it make you think what else they are censoring. Has Digg.com now just become a normal news site, picking what is best for the advertisers?
First let me get it out of the way, there is in no way a way which you can copyright the following “09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63”, it was randomly generated and in the same sense you could copyright the number 2007, so from now on anything which is copyright 2007 is no longer valid, yes it is rubbish, so why did Digg really take this action? Simply put the company like every other out there prefers money over the community. For those who say it is about Digg trying to be legal, to them I ask what about the Microsoft Vista crack that was posted on Digg? Or the tons of other cracks?
Digg has now lost many of the members respect over a small set of digits, and while they hope it will just fade away, we need to make sure it does not. - dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -11/+52http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/4034/pic4ka8.jpg

- arcooke, on 10/12/2007, -20/+13I don't think a lot of you realize.. Digg is no longer just a cool technology news website run by Kevin Rose. It's a company. It has employees. You know what happens when a small venture turns into a big business? It loses personality. It stops listening to the "little guys". Do you honestly think anyone at Digg is going to read this article and give two *****? Unfortunately not.. because theres a million other people still interested in the site that's paying their salaries.
Digg sold out a long time ago. I have a lot less respect for it now than I did a long time ago. Not because of this hex crap, but because it's now just a faceless company. - Muyoso, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1"I was going to have a few comments on the other (Social Networking site), (Digg.com), but it turns out that you have to go into rehab if you use the word '*****,' so I'm - so, kind of at an impasse, can't really talk about (Digg), so I think I'll just conclude here and take your questions."
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -22/+12Is everyone here retarted?! They have to draw the line somewhere, and all they need is to get sued out of existence, grow up a bit people
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -74/+87Are we still whining about this?
***** guys...come on...
And, seriously, "rights-destroying"? So, a company doesnt have the right to protect its Intellectual Property anymore? Artists dont have the right to control the licence of their works?
You sound like greedy children .. "I cant have it my way... bwaaaaaaaaaahh-bwwwwwahhhhhhhh"
Grow the ***** up already. Posting that code is no different that posting a serial code for software...circumventing copyright protection is, by law, copyright infringement. - mattym, on 10/12/2007, -20/+31@tvblogcan:
You're an idiot. It's not about copyright, and its not about free speech. First amendment protects you from the GOVERNMENT, not private
entities. Copyright is not the issue, but rather a host of other legal issues, including DMCA violations. Hey, I'm sure Digg would stand up
and go to court if you paid the legal fees. So what's stopping you, tough guy? - duhblow7, on 10/12/2007, -14/+9sign up here: http://reddit.com/
I did today. I needed to know what was going on with Digg removing a bunch of stories, and the information regarding the issues was not being removed at reddit. - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10You guys are worried about Kevin "the kid who made $60 million in 18 months" Rose being able to pay legal fees? Come on now.

Second of all, no one has claimed such a number was copywritten. It's a bad thing to assist people in doing bad things. - unusualbob, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Im sorry but i have no clue where you guys who think this is a legal problem are getting your information from. These numbers are entirely free use and are not intellectual property. These articles dont tell you how to use them illegally. These articles don't recommend that you use them illegally. None of this is illegal and how they could be used is totally up to the user. Digg just sees that the numbers have the possibility of being used illegally. So could guns, but you don't see articles about them being censored. Digg does need to learn a thing or two about free speech.

This is the bed that digg made. With open posting and unlimited moderation points, this was bound to happen eventually. Try to put out a fire this big and you'll unleash nerd vengeance on a biblical scale. Digg *is* its users, not the other way around.

Good riddance. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. We'll be better off without you.
This is corporate America. You can't just ignore legal threats for intellectual property on the front of a corporate website.
Lets put this how you will all understand.
1. Post cool hex number in the name of fair use.
2. Get told you are violating intellectual property and that you will be sued.
3. Stand up for our rights.
4. Get sued.
5. Lose money.
6. ...
7. Profit?
While it's nothing if you are sued because you have no money, job, house, etc. a company with deep pockets like Digg can't afford to get sued in a fight they know they will lose. - HalFTW, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Image:Krose.jpg

First: you're an idiot.
Second: So if you had the choice between taking down the code or potentially losing all of your millions of dollars, your job, home, etc you would leave the code up? Yeah right.
Having millions of dollars to lose makes you a good target for a lawsuit. Living in your parents basement does not.
- milocat, on 10/12/2007, -23/+19unless you're willing to put up the cash for digg's legal defense so you can pirate movies you can't even afford, yes it was totally worth it. they'd get sued and lose tons of money just to satisfy your pirating.
- fieryprophet, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8I don't own an HD-DVD player, much less any HD-DVDs to pirate, so this is totally irrelevant.

- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -28/+24Get over it already - they don't want to censor us, they have to because it is unfortunately a legal issue. You can talk about it all you want, but publishing the number iin context of its use is a problem - not with digg, but with the DMCA. You're fighting the wrong people here.
- fieryprophet, on 10/12/2007, -15/+58Look around. 99% of the places that you find 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5b D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 has nothing to do with it's "content"
- tagawa, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47@joel8x:
I beg to differ but they have been deleting stories that don't even contain the number and even banning accounts. The law does not require that. It was good while it lasted. - LordofShadows, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2So... what have I missed here?
- SIRBERUS, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10I find it funny that the blogger is complaining about Digg guarding themselves legally, yet, no where on the blog do I see them post the key.

@fieryprophet..Quiet a cool, clean blog site..no ads, nothing. Unless, I am missing the ads or something.
Atleast no one can bitch about being a blogspam link. - sn0re, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5SIRBERUS:
You apparently missed the very first line of his post, wherein he explains that his previous stories submitted to digg were deleted because they mentioned the number. You also missed the blog post right before that where he does mention the number. You fail at the internets. - joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The point is, they can't get in trouble for users just posting the number, it means nothing on its own. When it is posted in context to the HD DVD key, it becomes a problem. Unfortunately, with the amount of people posting it, there is going to be a lot of collateral damage because the digg team is not large enough to read every single post to determine the context. Don't get me wrong, I'm not backing censorship here, I'm just stating the obvious reason as to why it is happening. Do you really believe that the same guy who hosted those dark tips segments on TV is happy about this?

- kevinchai, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6It was funny, and I still have my account.
- kevinchai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19If they banned all the code typers , they would have a lot of users banned, which is not a good strategy.
- cubbieco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If they banned all of the code typists, then digg would lose a lot of the immature and/or high school types that have been really pissing everybody off lately anyway, so yes please ban all of the code typists.
- C3NSORED, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kevinchai (#6447741)
I never typed the code, and yet I have had two user accounts disabled and an IP banned. Explain that.
- Ubernero, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15It was worth it, why? because Digg will not be slapped with a cease and desist letter and possible legal action.
- KiSA, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22yeah, let's all leave digg and go to reddit... that site is so great and they probably never have problems with this kind of stuff
/sarcasm
(well, they probably DON'T have these issues since no one posts stuff there) - BobtheGreatZeta, on 10/12/2007, -18/+45I will continue to post this key in all comments as a form of protest over the bannings and encourage all others to do so. This isn't China, and the editors clearly need to be reminded of this!
09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -11/+13No, Digg isn't a product of China. However, I'm guessing Kevin Rose is pretty disgusted at the large portion of the community that seems to have blow this out of proportion. It's a minor issue... The magic numbers are all over the place, even without the spam in unrelated articles.
There's also the condoning of policy. Outside of a few oddballs, most content creators would really rather not have their stuff pirated, and that's why we have copyright laws. Sure, the RIAA and MPAA have been asshats about trying to proterct things and assuming that the consumers are thieves, but that's no reason to give them an excuse to lobby for for more restrictive laws by pirating material just to "stick it to the man."
If you can't accept the policy, do without. That's the best way to show them. - phoephus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Actually China doesn't care too much about copyrights.

- JackHoffman, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10There's a strange bug that causes all stories to be deleted if they refer to a specific sequence of hexadecimal numbers. The internet is doing a good job routing around that problem, but it's still annoying. I'm sure you will have no trouble finding the numbers. Apparently they are a key ingredient in pissing of the MPAA. Uses other than that are complicated and require an in-depth understanding of AACS, and they may or may not be illegal where you live.
- JackHoffman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Apparently some people don't know what it is that the internet perceives as damage and routes around.

- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The masses are going nuts and making empty threats (oh come on, you know you're BSing) of leaving Digg, because the HD-DVD decryption key got leaked. Digg started deleting threads and posts containing it, and banning the users who did so. Now it looks like they've also started banning users who were accusing them of censorship, which actually _is_ censorship (unlike the former, which was just complying with a cease and desist order).
- iRoy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15As users and most importantly, geeks, we all should have seen this coming. All good things don't last forever and I guess the same is true on Digg, how can you not expect them to become more careful about what makes the front page? Look at how successful digg is now.
Whatever, just enjoy Digg as it is right now before some big news company buys it...

- floatingpoints, on 10/12/2007, -9/+48Digg has a supposedly democratic system.
But the funny thing is, it's only democratic as long as they agree with it. Which essentially throws digg's concept out the ***** window. Little do most people know, digg is not responsible for the user generated content. In fact, the same law that the industry manipulates and exploits for their own good allows this: the DMCA.
See, democracy is a bitch in that if the voice of the majority overwhelms your personal feelings, you have to recognize said voice.
The fact of the matter is HD-DVD sponsors diggnation.
But we, as the users, don't really give a flying *****.
So here is F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 in all it's glory.
It's the key that you can use to decrypt HD-DVD movies. You can now back up your own HD-DVD, granted to you under fair use rights. The industry will continue to suffer, and hopefully will eventually fall to our feet. You work for us, not the other way around. We give you our money, therefore, we control you. Not the other way around. It's time we show this.

You are putting htem in danger of two things, both of whcih would be career suicide. 1. A big lawsuit. 2. A site shutdown. Actually, anotehr thing that alreayd happened...a BIG decrease in interest from potential big money buyers.
Was it worth it? Yeah. It saved their careers. And what did they lose? A few virgins ignorantly bitching like little pussies about free speech?
Here is another question ? Was it worth it to YOU *****? You didn't hurt Digg, or the MPAA ONE BIT. Yet you wasted two days of your lives. Now, for most people, that is important, but I guess for people who have no lives to begin with, it is not big deal. Was a URL ban worth it to you? You have no lives outside of Digg, and now some of you can't post on Digg ever. So is the need for sucidal thoughts worth it?
If you don't like Digg, then LEAVE. Kevin Rose DESPERATELY HOPES you leave. It would make the site more attractive to potential buyers for you to NOT be part of the userbase.- ditto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Guess what *****? We ARE their livelihood. Without its users this site is worthless, and judging from the fact that every single post on the front page is about the key or that fact that DIGG's response to the whole thing sucks, a lot of users feel pretty strongly about it.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really don't think it's appropriate for you to speak on behalf of digg.

Oh, come on. Get real. YOU are nothing. There would be enough users on Digg to keep it alive and well if all you self-aggrandizing nerds would suicide right now. You are less than peanuts, a drop in the ocean.
"Without its users this site is worthless"
The experience of TVTome being bought and turned into TV.com has shown that the "hardcore userbase" is hardly important. New users would join and replace the old farts, and nobody would notice. You aren't as important as you think you are, deal with it.
"a lot of users feel pretty strongly about it"
A lot of whiners flail their arms and stomp their feet, that's a vocal minority, nothing that can't be safely ignored.
Whether you like it or not, Digg has commercial value and is in for the money, not your nonexistant "rights". The rest of us who are interested in upholding REAL values couldn't care less. Thanks to your stupid actions the majority of Digg users will probably never be able to use the site as a speaking place for real anti-censorship battles. Thank you very much, losers.

- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12In Digg's defence: Why don't you pay for their lawyers when the MPAA launches their frivolous lawsuits?
- tvblogcan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Raian, this is not about the Law, if you think Digg took it down for the law your rather silly!

Can not be (C)'ed. This is about Digg and HD-DVD being a advertiser. - Raian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Well I'm sure it's a little bit of both-- but still what can they do? Reject their sponsor, lose out on that money, and face lawsuits-- or know that the information is already out there and bite the MPAA bullet. It's a tough decision, it's lose/lose. I didn't hear the outcry when digg took on the HD DVD has a sponsor.... so what's the big deal now?
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4So anybody can post any story on digg AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT offend one of their sponsors?
And any digg advertiser can be assured of a nice self contained marketing utopia where there products are not scrutinized or criticized?
- tvblogcan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7Raian, this is not about the Law, if you think Digg took it down for the law your rather silly!
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Ya know for as long as I can remember people have been complaining about digg and for as long as I can remember nobody has ever said anything other than, my story got deleted. I don't understand any of this. If digg is going to burry your stories digg probably isn't the right place to complain about it. Perhaps you should consider going to one of it's competitors and complaining about digg. Perhaps it won't be cencored and the rest of us can read about it. Or are you just trying to drum up traffic to your sad little blog.
- altjeringa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OK i'm an uninformed idiot. Please feel free to shot me. The author of the above has a right to be pissed off. But only in so much as he believes in freedom and democracy, both of which are always trumped by capital in this nation. Though you silly people who are defending digg on the grounds that the MPAA will be filling a lawsuit against them are pretty misinformed as well. When it comes to legitimate companies the MPAA as with most copyright holders issue a cease and desist order proir to actually filing suit, so removing such a post out of hand is a very crappy thing to do. I think digg takes more heat in this regard because they have been and have encouraged the apperance of being a democratically driven system and so the hopes of those who wish to see such a system succeed are dashed against the rocks when digg does not conform to that standard. It's much like Google opening shop in China, and Apple putting off the release of it's core product because "Analysts" think it's a good idea.
- tommydr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12In the meanwhile 206 diggs aren't enough to make popular this story.

I guarentee you all your "Fight the Power!" BS would be forgotten and you'd piss your pants if it was your name on the cease and desist.
- WarrenG1983, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I think it's funny that this blog post is questioning Digg's actions in taking down the stories containing the key, and even he says that he "won’t mention a certain sequence of numbers and letters that has the digg admins all up in arms."
Who needs to grow a pair Elijah Horton?- fieryprophet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I've posted it 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 times, read the previous article. Just didn't need to give the admins a reason to kill the post.
- dante2010, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Do you pay for digg? No. They can do whatever the hell they want with the content that you submit to them.
- tvblogcan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Yes, we do pay for Digg in all senses. They should be paying for content, without us they are nothing!
- akeating, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Were it not for us, digg would not exist. We do indeed pay for digg, each one of us.
- lilredsammy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"content you submit to them" The operative word is YOU, meaning the diggers. There is no digg without diggers.
