March for peace on October 18/19

The Canadian electoral system has failed to register the will of the the people who, in their majority, want to see an end to the war in Afghanistan. We applaud all anti-war candidates and activists who worked to bring the issue to light throughout the election campaign and invite you to join us for the pan-Canadian day of action against war on October 18 (October 19 in Vancouver).

Since our last posting, we have been joined by Calgary, Edmonton, St John's, Guelph, Victoria and Winnipeg who are also planning events for the 18th. That brings us to 12 events so far.

It is too early to predict exactly how this parliament will function, but the Liberal and Conservative parties still hold a dominant position in the house which will likely result in ongoing parliamentary support for the war. That means, at least, another 900 days of killing both Afghan civilians and Canadian soldiers. We may also see a reversal on Stephen Harper's commitment to a fixed end date of 2011.

All this comes amid a crisis in Afghanistan where civilian deaths are at the highest levels since the invasion of 2001. There is also a renewed offensive by the resistance movements which will likely result in more air strikes and civilian deaths. The argument from Stephen Harper that Canada's role is to help build the Afghan armed forces is also crumbling as defections from the Afghan army are on the rise. The war is lost for the west. The only question that remains is how many more innocent people will be killed before they realize the folly of their actions.

We will have to stop this war by building a mass movement that will force Stephen Harper to end the bloodshed.

Join us on October 18 &19 and lets start the fightback against the new Conservative government.
